Description
Yeast infections are caused by a fungus, candida albicans. A change in hormone levels during pregnancy, using birth control pills, or a change in the normal pH level of the vagina can all lead to a yeast infection as well. In short anything that changes the balance of bacteria and microorganisms in the vagina can cause a yeast infection.
Symptoms
Both men and women can get a yeast infection but men don't normally show any symptoms. At most a man will experience irritation of the glans (head of the penis). For women a yeast infections will cause intense itching and burning sensation around the vagina and vulva. Usually with the itching comes a vaginal discharge that can be white or a light yellow in color and will smell like bread or beer. It can be clumpy or thin in consistency and is a sure sign that you have a yeast infection.
Transmission
As stated above yeast infections happen when the pH or microbial balance of the vigina is thrown out of balance. This said a yeast infection is not a normal SDT. Although it can be transmitted to another partner, this is very rare though.
Treatment
There are many popular non-prescription treatments available for yeast infections. Simply check your local pharmacy for the Anti-fungal cream, vaginal suppositories or medicated tampon that you find works best for you. Creams are a little messy but the most common creams are miconazole, clotrimazole and econazole. Medicated tampons are often found to be a lot easier to use and less messy. For extreme pain and discomfort, your physician may wish to prescribe a mild steroid cream. If you have no experience with a yeast infection you should contact your physician to discuss the best solution for you.
